Do I need a passport?
If you plan to travel between Australia and any other country, or between two other countries, you must have a valid passport (typically with at least six months remaining before it expires).
How do I get a passport?
To get a new passport you must complete an official application form and then attend an interview at an Australia Post outlet.
You can complete and print a Passport Application Form at the Australian Passport Office website or pick one up at an Australia Post outlet.
You will then need to submit your application in person at an Australia Post outlet where your application and supporting documents will be checked. An appointment may be necessary and can be made online.
How do I renew my existing passport?
You can complete and print a Passport Renewal Form online at the Australian Passport Office website or pick one up at an Australia Post outlet.
Alternatively, phone the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232 and they will send a renewal form to you.
You will then need to attend a brief interview at an Australia Post outlet where you’ll submit your application and return your existing passport. An appointment may be necessary and can be made online.
What do I need to get a passport?
For a new passport you’ll need a completed application form, any supporting documentation (listed on your application), two identical colour passport photos of yourself and the passport fee.
See your application or the Australian Passport Office website for exact photo specifications. You can either have these taken at any business that offers passport photo services (such as a photo lab or pharmacy) or at an Australia Post outlet at the time of your interview for a fee.
How much does an Australian passport cost?
Below are listed Australian passport fees as at 1 January 2017 in Australian dollars. Fees are payable when you lodge your application.
|Adult (aged 16 years and older)
– 10-year validity
|Child (aged under 16 years)
– 5-year validity
|Senior (optional for those aged 75 and older)
– 5-year validity
|Frequent traveller passport
– 66 pages for immigration stamps and visas (compared to 34 pages for a standard passport)

How long is a passport valid?
Australian adult passports are valid for 10 years from the date of processing. Senior and child passports are valid for five years.
When do I receive my passport?
Your passport will be mailed to you within 10 working days. Alternatively, you can pick it up an Australian Passport Office.
What if I need a passport urgently?
If you need a passport urgently, you can you use the Priority Processing Service that guarantees processing within two working days plus delivery time for an extra fee of $183 (as at 1 January 2017).

What if I lose my passport?
It is important to report the loss or theft of your passport as soon as possible. This can be done online at the Australian Passport Office website or by calling the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232.
To obtain a new passport you will need to complete the standard application form (make sure you complete the section covering lost and stolen passports) and attend an interview at an Australia Post outlet. See details above.
You will need to pay the normal application fee plus an additional lost or stolen passport fee that depends on how many times your passport has been lost or stolen in the past five years. You can find out this amount by calling the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232.
